When we first met our husband, we probably started out friends for a little while before dating or courting. I was friends with my man for five years before we begin to date. I think it’s fun for us all to think back on all the things we used to do before marriage or even the early years of marriage. I know for me, it brings back lots of great memories.
Though, if we’re not careful, over time, we can let that friendship be put to the side. It’s not that we intentionally want that to happen, but with the challenges and business of life it can happen. If we don’t try to maintain a friendship with our husbands, we’ll eventually not want to be romantic with them. Holding hands, a kiss on the cheek, or even a simple hug won’t be a desire we have.
To me, my husband is much more of a friend now, than he was when we first met. We’ve been through so much together. How could I not call him my best friend? Life can put distance between a husband and a wife without them being aware of it. There are a lot of challenges in life and they’re not always fun.
If we’re not intentional about cultivating the relationship with our husband, we will find ourselves wondering what in the world is going on?
So I encourage you to laugh with your man still, hold his hand, and just lean into him. We are meant to not only be lovers, but genuine friends sharing dreams and disappointments. We have the best thing here on earth, our marriage. It’s going to be busy and hard, but we should join hands with our man, not push him away.
The Father wants us to be one so the trials can’t separate us. So is your husband a friend, your best friend? I pray you can say yes. If not, it’s not too late to work on that ladies.
Father, thank You for relationships. Thank You for our husbands and the gift of friendship we can share with them. Put a desire in us to be friends with our husband. Help us not let the trials and challenges of life come between us. Marriage is a sweet union and friendship is at the heart of it. Help us to forgive any wrong doing and to confess any wrong doing. We want the best marriage and friendship that You offer. Draw us closer to You and closer to one another. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
